Civic Engagement, Community Activism, and Political Leadership

The goals of this panel workshop on community activism are twofold: 1) To examine leadership in relation to the developmental stages of collective, civic engagement; discussion will focus on the Korean American League for Civic Action (KALCA) and the current state of organization/representation among Korean Americans in New York and New Jersey; and 2) To describe the processes of advocacy that lead to a clear, consistent vision and agenda in addressing community concerns; discussion will also describe possible ways in which to broaden the scope of local, ethnic issues to be more inclusive of other interests. With time permitting, speakers will explore the nature of effective communication within a coalition group of diverse interests, and with the community at large.
